Description
This 1961 356 T5 Coupe, refinished in its original factory color of Aetna Blue, has been restored and re-purposed in the popular Outlaw vogue. It features Plexiglas windows except for the windshield, jettisoning 200 pounds from the car’s weight. The bumper guards were removed and Deco strips cover the entire bumper, furthering the Factory GT appearance. Louvers cut into the engine deck lid allow more fresh air into the engine compartment. The 1961 356B Super 90 Coupe represented what was then the highest horsepower model of the Porsche pushrod street platform. Producing 90 HP, the Super 90 iteration performed nearly as well as the more complex 4-cam Carrera it was intended to replace (for street use.)
The Aetna Blue exterior of this T5, originally a standard color choice and now available only through Porsche’s Paint-to-Sample Program, is a pastel blue with a hint of grey. According to www.rennbow.org, the name “likely comes from the mythological figure Aetna, for whom Mount Etna, an active volcano in Sicily was named.” The color is an apt choice for this Outlaw. GT touches including the Deco strips and engine lid louvers complement its understated color.
Its leather interior is anything but understated, featuring red leather Speedster-style bucket seats with red houndstooth inserts, blue German Square Weave carpeting, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. A cover plate takes the place of a radio.
The replacement 1.6L flat-four, air-cooled engine of this Super 90 Coupe produces up to 90 HP at 5500 RPM, and 89 lb.ft. of torque at 4300 RPM. Power to the rear wheels comes through a 4-speed (Type 741) manual transmission. 0-60 MPH is achieved in less than 15 seconds. Its top speed is 110+ MPH.
